Symptom #7: Decreased Urine Volume
Oliguria or hypouresis refers to the low output of urine. It can be defined as having more than 80 ml of urine a day but less than 400 ml a day. It can occur when there is hypovolemic shock, dehydration, kidney failure, urinary retention, urinary obstruction, and urinary tract infections.
Oliguria should be distinguished from anuria, which means an absence of urine or less than 80 ml of urine a day. In septicemia, decreased urine volume occurs due to septic shock. This means that the infection is severe enough to the point where it affects the organ functions such as the kidneys, heart, and brain. It may also lead to organ failure.
