Symptom #2: Tachypnea and Difficulty Breathing
Tachypnea is a term that describes abnormally fast breathing. In adults, the normal respiratory rate ranges from 12 to 20 breaths per minute. Tachypnea occurs when the respiratory rate is more than 20 breaths per minute. Tachypnea can occur as part of normal physiological response to exertion such as exercise.
Pathological causes of tachypnea include pulmonary embolism, diabetic ketoacidosis, pneumonia, carbon monoxide poisoning, heart failure, anxiety, and septicemia. In septicemia, tachypnea can be attributed to the lungs being the commonest site of infection. Also, in non-pulmonary causes of infection, acute lung injury also often occurs.
