Symptom #8: Arthralgia
The word arthralgia originated from a Greek word that means joint pain. It can occur due to injury, illness, allergy, or infection. The treatment of arthralgia depends on the specific underlying cause. In erythema infectiosum, since the viral infection is often self limiting, arthralgia in patients can be managed using pain medication and capsaicin (which is a substance found in chili peppers) that helps block the actions that transmit pain signals.
Topical ointments and creams that contain the ingredient methyl salicylate may also be helpful. The most commonly affected sites are the fingers, knees, wrists, and ankles.
