What Is Melatonin?

8. Is It Safe for Children?
Compared to adult use, there is little research on safe and effective melatonin use for children. Because of the lack of information, particularly on long-term use, be cautious when giving this supplement to children.
Some evidence suggests that melatonin affects hormonal development in children. Use of this supplement may affect puberty, menstrual cycles and the production of prolactin, but research is inconclusive.
Some children have also reported mild side effects when taking this supplement. Although not present in all cases, agitation, bed wetting, headaches, drowsiness and dizziness are some mild side effects.
Hormonal effects are more serious than these side effects, so work with a healthcare provider to ensure that children use hormone supplements with caution. Some cases of sleep issues can be alleviated with this hormone, but it should only be used if other methods of non-hormonal assistance have already been tried.
