6. How Much Melatonin Is a Proper Dose?

The most common melatonin dosing studied in scientific research is between 0.5 mg and five mg. However, some cases individuals have taken up to 40 mg in combination with therapy for tumors and low levels of platelets in the blood.

For common sleep disorders, most individuals take between 0.5 mg and 5 mg daily before bedtime. Other studies used two to 12 mg of melatonin for up to four weeks. Individuals who have difficulties falling asleep typically take between 0.3 mg and five mg for nine months.

Talk to your doctor before taking high doses of melatonin or taking it for longer than a few months. The typical amount used for jet lag, anxiety, sleep issues and high blood pressure all depends on your weight, age and other factors.
