7. Drug Interactions
The most important interaction to avoid is melatonin and sedative medications, like CNS depressants. Any sedative causes sleepiness. When combined with melatonin, you may experience increased levels of sleepiness that may be dangerous to your normal functioning. Don’t combine any sedative medication with this supplement.
There are a few moderate interactions that you need to be aware of and cautious. If you’re using birth control pills, caffeine, Fluvoxamine, immunosuppressants or anti diabetic drugs, avoid using melatonin or ask your doctor for more clarification. These drugs either increase the symptoms of melatonin or counteract them. Either way, these interactions may cause too much drowsiness or limit the effectiveness of your supplement.
