Cause #7: Pregnancy
Thrombocytopenia is, together with anemia, the most common cause of disorders in the blood during pregnancy. As pregnancy progresses, the levels of thrombocytes continue to decrease due to an increased consumption and aggregation of platelets and hemodilution. The most common type of the condition during pregnancy is gestational thrombocytopenia and occurs during the second or third trimester.
Thrombocytopenia doesn´t represent any serious threat to the pregnant patient, but it may require close monitoring and most possibly therapy. It is important to recognize whether the present thrombocytopenia is due to the pregnancy itself or if it has another cause.
