Cause #5: Viral Infections

Thrombocytopenia is seen as a complication when it occurs in patients with a viral infection. It is a common complication of infections such as HIV, Dengue, or HCV. In fact, thrombocytopenia is commonly the first symptom of HIV a patient starts to notice.

It is believed that a viral infection leads to pathogenic mechanisms within the platelets, such as bone marrow suppression. The pathophysiology of thrombocytopenia in patients with some viral infections is still not completely agreed on, but it is commonly known that viral infections often are followed by thrombocytopenia. This complication makes treatment of the viral infection more of a challenge.
