Cause #2: Anemia

It is believed that some types of anemia affect the thrombocytes and directly lead to thrombocytopenia. Conversely, there are many cases in which a patient with thrombocytopenia suffers from anemia as well. Until now, the focus was on treating both conditions separately without noticing their connection to one another.

However, one theory says that iron therapy or transfusions given to patients with anemia may also lead to the development of thrombocytopenia. Accordingly, it is advised to watch out for the patient´s reaction to iron or transfusion therapies, especially after being diagnosed with thrombocytopenia.
