8. Blood in Phlegm
Phlegm is a type of mucus that is usually found in our respiratory passages. Its purpose is to help trap pathogens and particles that might otherwise cause problems for us. This mucus will usually be processed by the body, meaning we dont see it, but it will sometimes be coughed up. When it is coughed up, phlegm is usually white/clear, and sometimes with some green if some nasal mucus is present as well. If there is an injury to the respiratory passages or a medical condition, like cancer, then blood may also be present in the mucus when it is coughed up.
