7. What Events Can Trigger BPV?
While doctors do not entirely understand the causes behind episodes of BPV, there are certainly some activities that can trigger it. Being at rest for a long time and then moving after a while can trigger an episode of BPV. Sometimes athletes will experience a sudden onset of BPV after riding a bike over rough terrain or engaging in aerobics at a high level of intensity. Most commonly, an injury to the head is the cause of BPV in people under the age of 50. It may be that the head being jostled is what dislodges the calcium crystals and causes them to move. The older you are, the more worn out your inner ear becomes, and sometimes elderly people will get BPV without experiencing any of the above triggers.
