When you hear about someone experiencing a dizzy spell, you may not think much of it. We all sometimes lose our balance in specific situations. However, if someone you know is feeling dizzy all the time, even after a slight change in position, they may have what is known as Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo. That is quite a mouthful, and you are probably wondering: is this condition serious? Once you understand BPV a little better, you will be better able to help people you know who may suffer from it or cope if you are dealing with BPV yourself.

1. What Is Vertigo Anyway?

To fully understand BPV, you first need to understand vertigo itself. Vertigo is the name for the sensation people experience when they feel off balance. It can cause someone to feel dizzy, sometimes for apparently no reason. Some people will experience vertigo without realizing that there is typically an underlying cause. The common reason people experience vertigo is due to a problem with their inner ear. A healthy inner ear is crucial to the body being able to stay balanced and avoid unexpected spells of dizziness.
