5. How Was BPV Discovered?
BPV is very likely something that people have been experiencing for as long as homo sapiens have existed, but it was first described and acknowledged in medical literature in 1897. It was at this time that Adler first wrote about the symptoms people were experiencing, though he did not yet coin the term “BPV.” Bárány again discussed the medical issue of BPV in 1922 but still did not use the name we know today. The name for BPV did not arise until 1952, and it was at this time that a diagnostic test was developed to help identify it in people. The name BPV was coined at this time by the scientists Hallpike and Dix.
