8. The Procedure

As mentioned, a lipid panel test involves taking blood from the body first. To help with this, the nurse will often place a rubber band on your upper arm and this will cause the blood vessels in your forearms to fill with blood. An area of the skin is then sterilized and a standard needle is used to penetrate the skin so that blood can be accessed.

The nurse will then remove the elastic band, and this will allow the blood to flow freely again, meaning that more blood can be collected. The needle is removed once sufficient blood has been collected, and a small bandage is applied to the area where the needle was inserted. Sterilized equipment will be used to help prevent infection.
