There are a number of problems that can lead to swollen tonsils. One of the most common issues (aside from tonsillitis) is mono. If the throat is sore but tonsillitis is not the cause, then it might be mono. Other symptoms of mono include enlarged lymph nodes, headaches, and a decreased appetite.
