As we age, we can also find that certain areas of our skin become discolored. Insulin resistance can also cause such discolorations, particularly acanthosis nigricans.

Acanthosis nigricans is the name given to a disorder that causes dark patches to form on the skin. These patches also take on a velvety texture and are most often found on the neck, groin, and armpits. Treatments tend to have only a limited effect, while it is common to try and treat the underlying cause.
