The arrival of local anesthetics helped to revolutionize much of modern medicine. It meant that patients could be operated on without causing them extreme pain. It helped to make many procedures easier and helped to relieve the discomfort of people that had acquired serious injuries.
Lidocaine is a form of local anesthetic that can be found in many skin creams that are used to relieve pain. It is available over the counter and is usually quite harmless. It can also be used to treat more complicated conditions such as ventricular tachycardia.
Unfortunately, though, it is not without its side effects, some of which can be quite serious.

Lidocaine Side Effect #1: Skin Irritation
Our skin comes into direct contact with numerous substances every single day. The vast majority of the time, these substances are harmless and we barely even notice they are there. At other times, though, substances are not so harmless and can cause us considerable irritation.
While lidocaine is often used to treat skin irritations, it can sometimes cause irritation of the skin in itself. This is quite a common symptom and is not usually something to be concerned about. It is often still soothing the original condition regardless of irritation it may be causing. Speak with your doctor if you are not sure.
