Symptom #2: Hair Loss
Ringworm infection on the scalp can cause patches of hair loss. This is also known as tinea capitis. On the scalp, it often starts as a small itchy bump that may seem like a pimple. It then gradually expands in size and leave patches of scalp that are scaly with temporary baldness.
Once the fungus invades the hair fibers on the scalp, the hairs in the affected region become brittle and start to break off easily resulting in a patch of bald skin. The affected area is also often red, inflamed, itchy, and scaly. The area can also blister and start weeping or oozing. The fungus microsporum audouinii and trichophyton tonsurans are common causes of tinea capitis.
