Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is the most common of genetic disorders and occurs when chromosome 21 has three separate copies of the chromosomes instead of just two. This extra copy of the chromosome is responsible for Down syndrome features.5‘Down Syndrome - Symptoms and Causes.’ Mayo Clinic, 8 Mar. 2018, www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/down-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20355977

One of the earliest signs of Down syndrome in infants is a thickened tongue, which can cause problems when feeding. Another of the mucocutaneous disorders is geographic tongue. This condition doesn't affect the child in the slightest, but it may cause parents undue concern.6Bilgili, S Gunes et al. ‘Mucocutaneous disorders in children with down syndrome: case-controlled study.’ Genetic counseling (Geneva, Switzerland) vol. 22,4 (2011): 385-92
