9. Prognosis
The prognosis in COPD has been correlated with various measures such as blood gas measurements, diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), clinical status, body mass index (BMI), exercise capacity, and radiographic severity. A commonly use tool is the BODE (BMI, obstruction (FEV1), dyspnea, and exercise capacity) index. Based on the Morbidity Mortality Weekly Report study by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the reported age-standardized death rate due to COPD for adults above the age of 25 years old is 64.3 deaths per 100,000 individuals. However, this rate varies based on location with the highest rate in Oklahoma and lowest rate in Hawaii.
