7. Imaging and Other Tests

In emphysema, the chest radiograph shows signs of hyperinflation. The x-ray will show increased air space and a flattened diaphragm. A high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan is more sensitive and can be highly specific for the diagnosis of emphysema as it outlines bullae that are generally not observed on an x-ray. When surgical intervention such as a lung-volume surgery or bullectomy is considered, a CT scan may be beneficial. However, it is not for routine care of COPD patients. Another test that may be beneficial is the pulmonary function test. This test helps to diagnose obstructive airway disease and to assess the severity of the condition. Spirometry can also be beneficial to assess treatment response and disease progression.
