8. Treatment and Management
Patient education is vital as part of patient management. The goal is to decrease symptoms, prevent progression, improve health, prevent complications , and reduce mortality. Smoking cessation is the most effective therapy for COPD patients. Physicians are critical in intervening and supporting smoking cessation and preventing relapse. Nicotine replacement therapies and medications such as varenicline can also help. Bronchodilators are the main component in the treatment of patients as they help to dilate the airways to improve symptoms. Other possible medications include phosphodiesterase inhibitors, anti-inflammatory therapy, antibiotics, mucolytic agents, and proton pump inhibitors. Oxygen therapy and vaccinations should also be part of the management plan for the patient.
