What Is Bronchitis?
9. Medication
Symptomatically, relief from coughing can be obtained through central cough suppressants such as dextromethorphan and codeine. Short acting beta-agonists such as theophylline and ipratropium bromide can also help control breathlessness, chronic cough, and spasms in the airways.
Patients with chronic bronchitis may benefit from a combination of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists. In an acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, anticholinergic bronchodilators, short-acting agonists, and a short course of systemic corticosteroids has been proven to be effective. Mild to moderate pain can be treated using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while mucolytics, guaifenesin products, and albuterol can provide additional benefits. Antibiotics can be given for those with confirmed bacterial infections.
