7. Interleukin Targeted Therapy
The increasing knowledge about interleukins has helped improve the understanding about how diseases occur. This helps researchers to study potential drug targets for new therapies. Some of the following are examples of how research regarding interleukins have been helpful. Mepolizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody targeted interleukin 5 used for the treatment of severe eosinophilic asthma. Other drugs that are currently in use targeting interleukins include rilonacept for familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome (FCAS) and Muckle-Wells syndrome (MWS), canakinumab for cryporin associated periodic syndromes, MWS, and FCAS, anakinra for rheumatoid arthritis, and daclizumab for multiple sclerosis.
