9. Treatment

Prevention is key in influenza. Treatment is usually symptomatic. This means bed rest is greatly beneficial for influenza patients. Those with severe respiratory symptoms may require supplemental oxygen. Patients in respiratory failure may require intubation. Some medications such as antivirals can be used as prophylaxis or treatment of influenza. Some examples of antivirals include Oseltamivir, Peramivir, Baloxavir marboxil, and Zanamivir. For treatment purposes, the antivirals should be administered within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. They are most effective if given within the first 24 hours. Oseltamivir can be prescribed for infants under 12 months old if necessary.
