8. Timeline of Symptoms

The symptoms in influenza tend to appear suddenly. Within a few hours, the patient may transition from feeling fine to having symptoms. A high fever is more common for those with influenza compared to the cold. These symptoms generally peak between days 2 to 4. Some patients may feel better by day 5 and return to school or work. Patients should stay home and rest for at least 24 hours after their fever breaks. Patients who have a fever that resolves only with medication should remain at home. Most influenza patients feel significantly better by day 7. The flu may last more than a week. However, those with worsening symptoms after a week should seek medical attention.
