10. Prognosis and Prevention
Patients without an underlying disease who contract influenza have a very good prognosis. However, they may experience a longer recovery time and remain fatigued or weak for several weeks after the other symptoms have resolved. The mortality (death) rate from influenza is highest among the elderly and infants. Diabetes increases the risk of complications. Based on a study involving more than 150,000 participants, adult diabetics were found to have a significantly higher risk for influenza-related complications. Vaccination for influenza is available and recommended for high-risk individuals. To control transmission, a good hand-washing technique and hygiene such as not touching the eyes, nose, and mouth, and covering coughs and sneezes, can be beneficial.
