4. Transmission and Infection
The transmission of influenza from pigs or poultry to humans usually occurs due to direct contact with animals. The risk increases significantly during slaughter or when being prepared for consumption. Avian influenza can also be transmitted through surfaces and water contaminated with bird droppings. It spreads from human to human via aerosols that are created when one coughs or sneezes. Once a susceptible individual inhales the aerosol, there is a possibility that the virus will invade the respiratory cells. Once invasion occurs, it starts to replicate. Symptoms begin when the body starts to fight it and releases inflammatory mediators. The incubation period usually ranges about 1 to 4 days.
