4. Barium Swallow
A barium swallow is another method to diagnose gastric ulcers in which the patient drinks a fluid containing barium that covers the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. This allows the doctor to observe the state of the stomach and intestine from a subsequent X-ray. Your doctor may also use an endoscopy, especially if there is bleeding. In an endoscopy, a thin tube is inserted through the mouth to the stomach and small intestine. A biopsy can be taken and analyzed if the doctor asked for an endoscopic biopsy.
