Diagnosing stomach ulcers depends on how severe the symptoms are. The doctor will need to get a complete medical history of the patient in addition to all the symptoms, and any medications that the patient may be taking. H. pylori is ruled out by taking a blood, stool, or breath examination. The breath test is done by drinking a purified liquid and then the patient is asked to breathe into a bag. The bag is sealed. If the patient has H. pylori, the breath will contain a high level of CO2.
