2. Causes of Pickwickian Syndrome
Pickwickian syndrome has no known definite cause. However, there are many factors contributing to its occurrence. The most common factor is excessive body weight or obesity. Obesity is the condition in which person has a body mass index (BMI) measurement of over 30. Less common factors associated with OHS include the deterioration of the brains ability to control breathing and the inability to breathe properly due to obesity and excess weight in the chest. As a result of poor breathing, inadequate oxygen reaches essential organs such as the brain and the heart. The chronic low oxygen level can cause permanent changes in these and other body organs.
