8. Diagnosis
While the condition is generally called red eye, there is no one diagnosis for it because of the multiplicity of possible causes. However, initial diagnosis is usually done by interviewing the patient to find out when the condition began, and also examining the eyes to see if there are signs suggestive of the cause. The doctor will look for corneal tears, signs of chemical burns, or presence of foreign objects. If there are no obvious signs of physical damage, the doctor may reach the diagnosis of red eyes due to conjunctivitis. This is because conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eyes. In case of moderate to severe pain, vision loss, corneal damage or distorted pupil, the patient may need referral to a specialist eye doctor.
