Red eyes typically start showing in the morning when you wake up. This is especially the case if the cause is inadequate sleep or overuse of electronic devices such as a smartphone. However, redness can occur at any time depending on its cause. If the eyes are still exposed to the causative agent, the redness will remain, and may worsen. For instance, exposure to an irritant chemical leads to a mild form of red eyes with the redness increasing with continued exposure. Pain and swelling of the eyes and the eyelids may follow, and the patient may end up needing to visit the emergency department.
