For most cases of red eyes, the first course of action should be to maintain good personal hygiene especially as far as the eyes are concerned. Wash your face with warm water several times throughout the day and keep your fingers away from the eyes. If you must touch the eyes, wash your hands thoroughly first. Applying warm compresses two or three times a day can also reduce the discomfort. And if you think your eye redness is a result of exposure to some irritant, keep away from it. Drinking more water throughout the day can improve hydration and help clear red eyes. According to some studies, omega-3 rich foods such as salmon and seeds like flaxseed can also help reduce the inflammation.
