2. Causes of Red Eyes
Red eyes may be the result of exposure to allergens and other irritants. Red eyes occur when small capillaries near the outer surface of the eye, under the conjunctiva, dilate so that more blood flows through them. This increased flow of blood makes the otherwise invisible blood vessels visible. Specific causes of red eyes include exposure to air-borne allergens, including those caused by air pollution, smoke, fumes, dust, chemicals, and dry air. Overexposure to sunlight and the ultraviolet light in it can also cause red eyes.
