Podkolzin was born in Novosibirsk, Soviet Union, in 1985. His professional basketball career came with Lokomotiv Novosibirsk before signing for Metis Varese in Italy in December 2001. In 2004, he got his first chance in the NBA when Utah Jazz picked him up.

His spell at Utah Jazz was short-lived, and he was soon traded to the Dallas Mavericks. In total, he only played a total of 6 games in the NBA, with 9 rebounds and 4 points scored. He then joined minor league team the Fort Worth Flyers, before eventually heading East again. At 7’5”, Podkolzin was the joint 6th tallest basketball player.
