2. Risk Factors
Though SARS was contained in 2004, there is always a risk of re-emergence in viruses that originate in animals. The SARS virus can affect anyone, but certain individuals are more at risk. People who come into contact with someone who has the illness are more likely to get it themselves, placing healthcare providers and family members at higher risk.
SARS also occurred in individuals who did not have known close contact with someone who had the illness. In Beijing, researchers found that a significant number of individuals who did not have known contact with a SARS patient had dined outside of their own household, taken numerous taxi rides or visited a clinic where SARS patients were treated.2Wu, Jiang et al.
