Symptom #10: Depression
Depression is defined as a low mood that can affect one’s sense of well-being and lead to abnormal behavior or tendencies as well as suicidal thoughts. It is often seen among patients with chronic diseases, especially when they have to adapt to or cope with a loss, such as losing the ability to walk, losing a body part through surgery (mastectomy), and losing cognitive functions (dementia).
Patients with macular degeneration usually experience depression, particularly in the first few months after their diagnosis, as they cope with the loss of central vision. The loss of central vision makes it difficult to perform daily tasks, such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Furthermore, the condition does not have a cure.
