5. Marisol

The name Marisol is a shortened version of the Virgin Mary’s title, which was: Mari Mar de la Soledad. In English this means “Mary of the Solitude.” A popular name in Spain, it is also popular in some other Spanish speaking countries and in other parts of the world. It is sometimes mistakenly believed the name comes from the Spanish word for sunflower, which is actually girasol.

There are currently around 86 girls expected to be given the name per 1 million in the US in 2019. This is after a decline in popularity of the name that started in the early 2000s. At its peak in 1996, almost 700 babies were being given the name per 1 million in the US.
