The name Marisol is a shortened version of the Virgin Mary’s title, which was: Mari Mar de la Soledad. In English this means “Mary of the Solitude.” A popular name in Spain, it is also popular in some other Spanish speaking countries and in other parts of the world. It is sometimes mistakenly believed the name comes from the Spanish word for sunflower, which is actually girasol.
