3. Is Melatonin Safe?

For most individuals, melatonin is a safe supplement. Some evidence suggests that it promotes increased sleep in the short term. Because this hormone is naturally found in your body, there are few side effects associated with melatonin use. Long-term use may affect your natural production of this hormone, but short-term use may adjust your short-term sleep issue.

Some research even suggests it may benefit individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. There is some evidence that this hormone improves cognitive impairment and even prevents cell damage in individuals with ALS.

As with any supplement, be sure to talk to your doctor before using melatonin. Although rare and mild, there are some side effects and other medication interactions associated with this supplement.
