What Is Melatonin?

2. Melatonin and Sleep
Your body’s circadian rhythm is tuned to the amount of melatonin in your body. Your circadian rhythm, also known as your internal clock, is regulated to sleep/awake cycles depending on the amount of melatonin in your body. If your pineal gland in your brain is struggling to produce melatonin, or if you’re attempting to sleep during the day or sleep despite insomnia, your natural hormone production may not be enough to encourage your internal clock to think about sleep. Other sleep issues include waking up too early or too often. A dose of melatonin is designed to encourage a full night’s rest.
Unlike sedatives, melatonin works with the natural hormones in your body to encourage a full night’s rest that allows your mind and body to go through all the sleep cycles. Peaceful, restful sleep may be possible with this supplement.
