Those that do believe leaky gut is a genuine condition believe that irritation of the bowel lining can result in particles of food, pathogens, and toxins passing through. Furthermore, it is thought by many that the condition can lead to a range of unwelcome symptoms and is suspected to be the cause behind some chronic condition.

Many believe that these particles flowing through the blood stream can trigger immune responses which themselves can lead to a number of side effects. Again, there is no evidence of this happening on the scale some claim it does, or of the immune responses it supposedly triggers.
