2. Genuine Conditions

As mentioned, there are some situations where the seals between the bowel’s cells somehow become damaged, allowing particles to pass through. Alcohol, NSAIDs, and aspirin, in particular, are known to be able to do this. In addition, inflammatory conditions like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) can cause problems, as can coeliac disease and certain intestinal infections.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy may also cause the seals to be broken, as can some immune suppressants. The condition can occur in people that have chronic kidney disease, diabetes, sepsis, and some surgery procedures. Despite this, these conditions still do not amount to the ‘leaky gut’ syndrome that many are convinced exists.
