3. Strep Throat
Another common cause of a scratchy throat is strep throat, an infection caused by the streptococcus bacteria. Throat pain caused by strep tends to arise suddenly and often makes swallowing painful or difficult. Aside from throat discomfort, strep can also make a person’s voice sound hoarse and scratchy.
