3. Underlying Illness

Red eyes may also have an underlying cause such as a disease. Such conditions include eye trauma, corneal ulcers, and eye infections such as acute glaucoma, irititis, keratitis, and conjunctivitis. Smoking and consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol can also cause red eyes. Inadequate sleep and use of electronic devices over extended periods of time can also cause red eyes.
