What Is Irony?

If something is ironic, it means that something has been said or an event has taken place that is the opposite of what you would expect to happen. For example, you would expect a cobbler’s children to have shoes, and it would be very ironic if they did not.
Irony is not always deliberate, but it can be. It is often manmade, while ironic situations can also be naturally occurring events. It is sometimes used in comedy, and can also be used to highlight just how ridiculous some situations are. Here are a few more examples of situations that are ironic.

1. Fire Station Burning Down
Firefighters have one of the most important jobs in town and cities throughout the world. They have what is an often very dangerous job, and their actions will often literally save lives. If you do encounter a fire that is potentially dangerous, you should waste no time in calling the fire department yourself. A firefighter’s main job is to extinguish fires. As such, you would expect them to be able to extinguish a fire in their own fire station if one breaks out, while it can also be surprising that one broke out in the first place. This makes a fire station burning down a very ironic situation.
