What Is a VSCO Girl?
The world has seen countless trends, and there are bound to be countless more to surface in the future. As with most trends, old ones will die out and new ones will replace them, until it is time for those to die out also. One of the current trends to have surfaced is the VSCO girl.
A VSCO girl is generally young. VSCO stands for Visual Supply Company, after a photography app for mobiles that goes by the same name. VSCO girls like to use the app, and similar, to create content for Instagram and YouTube accounts etc. Here’s a look at what a VSCO girl is and some of the things that interest them.
1. Positive Vibes
VSCO girls tend to come in for a lot of criticism from some quarters, although the same could be said for a lot of other groups of people. While the VSCO girl group may not be everybody’s cup of tea, however, they are not a group that is likely to do any harm to others. Being a VSCO girl is all about being positive and treating other people in a positive manner. It is about being able to do want you want without having others judge you. There are some, however, who feel that their preference for expensive brand name products makes them quite an exclusive club.
2. Eco-Friendly
Our planet is in dire need of help because we are polluting and suffocating it, and causing it to become hotter than it should be. While things need to be done, the planet’s population in general seems to be slow to react, particularly older people for who the negative effects won’t be a problem personally.
Younger people are taking more notice of climate change, however, and understandably so. VSCO girls are no exception and they try to send an eco-friendly message overall. As time goes by, it is likely that more and more people will start joining in with eco-friendly movements.
3. Save The Turtles
When speaking with VSCO girls, you might find that they will occasionally interject ‘save the turtles’ into discussions. This is not just a meaningless soundbite but goes hand in hand with the eco-friendly nature. I.E., they really want the turtles to be saved. They try and do their part to achieve this as well.
This includes using paper and metal straws instead of plastics and they are also known for using (often designer) reusable water bottles. Some people claim they are only doing this in order to conform with the VSCO image, but these actions are still beneficial to the environment regardless.
4. SKSKSKSK
It is common for different groups of people to have their own words and phrases. Using them helps them to be part of the crowd and helps other people to identify them as being part of that group. When it comes to VSCO girls, one common phrase is ‘SKSKSKSK’. It is likely that ‘SKSKSKSK’ originated from the black LGBT community and was also often used among the Stan Twitter community, which got its name from the song ‘Stan’, by Eminem.
‘SKSKSKSK’ is usually typed as an expression of surprise or as laughter, and it was VSCO girls who started actually vocalizing the term rather than just typing it.
5. I OOOP
I OOOP is another phrase that has become synonymous with VSCO girls, and also has its roots in black LGBT culture. The term can be specifically pinpointed to an online video that was made by the drag queen Jasmine Masters. During the video, Masters stops suddenly and whelps ‘I OOOP’.
After a pause, she informs us that she has ‘hit her balls’, and she abruptly stops the video, apparently in some pain. The term is often also used by VSCO girls. It is used to signify that they have had to stop mid-sentence because they are surprised by something or managed to hurt themselves somehow.
6. Causal Dressing Style
A lot of people tend to be into certain types of fashion, and members of certain groups might be expected to dress in a certain way. It could be considered that ‘no fashion’ is a fashion statement in itself, and VSCO girls are known for not dressing up often. Instead, they are more likely to wear loose, comfortable clothing such as large T-shirts and comfortable sneakers.
They are likely to choose footwear such as Crocs or Vans in particular. They are also known for using a ‘lite’ make-up style that often appears as though they are wearing no make-up at all.
7. Scrunchies
Scrunchies have been around for quite a long time, having first been invented in 1963. They were named after Scunci, the name of the poodle owned by Ronny Revson, who first patented the product. Since they first became available, scrunchies have come in and out of fashion and they have recently seen a resurgence thanks to VSCO girls.
Scrunchies are a popular accessory among VSCO girls and they fit in well with their causal and comfortable dressing style. While scrunchies are mostly used to tie hair back, they are also sometimes used as accessories and worn around ankles and wrists etc.
8. Messy Hair
It is not uncommon for women and girls of all ages to spend a lot of time getting their hair just right. It can be very time consuming, and even expensive, while there is also often a lot of social pressure to have hair that is just perfect. VSCO girls don’t have that problem, however, because they prefer to just keep their hair scruffy a lot of the time anyway.
Even if they don’t have it scruffy, they tend not to find it necessary to spend a lot of time getting it right. This may not be everybody’s preference, but it does hold some benefits for VSCO girls.
9. Cute Stickers
A lot of us use stickers to brighten up objects or just make them more interesting to us. The type of stickers you use will depend largely on your personal interests and there are stickers representing just about every interest you can think of. For VSCO girls, lots of stickers are a must. A VSCO girl’s favorite kind of sticker will be the ‘cute’ type.
They prefer lover hearts, sweet kittens, cute turtles, and just about anything else that makes you go ‘Awww’. You can also expect to find them used just about anywhere, especially laptops, smartphones, pencil cases, and books.
10. Kanken Backpacks
Having a back-pack can be very useful. It is an easy and comfortable way for people to carry what they need and in a way that also makes things easily accessible. Like so many other people, VSCO girls also like to carry backpacks, but not just any backpack will do. Kanken backpacks are made by Fjallraven, which is a Swedish company.
The backpacks are made completely from recycled polyester which fits in with VSCO girls’ eco-friendly mantra. They are also quite simple in design, which is also appealing to VSCO girls. These bags are often sold in pink or white, although they are also available in a light brown color.
