In regions with a tropical climate, influenza cases occur throughout the whole year. Meanwhile, in the Northern Hemisphere, it starts in early fall, peaks mid-February, and ends in the late spring. However, the severity and duration vary according to the subtype of virus. Per the World Health Organization, it is estimated that annual influenza results in 3 to 5 million severe cases and 250,000 to 500,000 deaths annually. Although adult influenza deaths are not reportable, pediatric cases are reported. The 2019-2020 influenza season resulted in 55,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths of which 27 were pediatric.
