Cause #2: Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, Microsporum

Ringworm is usually caused by three main types of fungus: trichophyton, epidermophyton, and microsporum. There are many different strains of trichophyton, epidermophyton, and microsporum fungi, all of which can cause a variety of issues in humans such as athlete’s foot, toenail fungal infections, etcetera.

These three main groups of fungi causing ringworm have different preferences. Some prefer to live in soil (geophilic), some prefer humans (anthropophilic), and others prefer animals (zoophilic). Cats are natural hosts and can pass on trichophyton infection to humans.
