Mosquitos can be very annoying. They can leave itchy, uncomfortable bites that can potentially become infected, but those are not the only problems they cause. Mosquitos are also carriers of various parasites and pathogens that can cause us to become quite ill. One of these is a virus called chikungunya which causes an illness of the same name.
While the fatality rate of chikungunya is only around 1 in 1,000 it can still cause some unpleasant and lasting symptoms. While most people should recover fully in just a week or so, the young, old and weak are vulnerable. In severe cases, it can cause complications of the heart and possibly permanent eye damage.

Symptom #1: Nausea
Nausea is actually quite a common symptom that can be caused by a huge range of illnesses. The causes can range from something that will pass harmlessly in time to something that could be life-threatening. If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting, it could be a sign that you have contracted chikungunya.
Excess vomiting can be uncomfortable and even quite harmful if it is severe enough. What’s more is that it causes vital food and fluids to be ejected from the body before they can be absorbed. This can lead to malnutrition and dehydration, possibly leading to more serious complications.
